A good day (so far, at least)
Mar. 1st, 2007 12:03 pmFunny how sometimes after a short night (only 4 1/2 hours of sleep) I'm almost unable to move, concentrate, talk etc. And on other days - like today - I feel totally chipper after the same amount of sleep. Can't explain it, I'm afraid, but I'm certainly very pleased.
Spent a lovely evening yesterday. The Italian consul had invited consuls from mostly European embassies - but the colleagues from US and Argentina were there as well - some of whom I already knew, and others I met for the first time. It was all very informal, so no need for small talk, very little talk about work. Just good company and nice food. The party didn't break up too late, some time around 10.30, but I decided to walk part of the way home (Ankara has to be one of the safest cities in the whole world). So I got home at about 11, but I'd had a double espresso and one of those incredibly sugar-saturated Turkish sweets in the afternoon, and then another espresso after dinner, so I just couldn't sleep until 1 am.
But I'm stil feeling bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, and of course looking forward to tonight's kick-box lesson no.2.
The German colleague - and isn't she the lucky one, because the Germans always keep consular and administrative work separate, so she only does administration - came up with the idea of belly dance classes. She's wanted to do that for some months now, only never found anybody who'd go with her, and so I said I'd be interested. That and the kick-boxing might so something for my extremely poor coordination (I'm quite clumsy which, combined with vertigo, doesn't make my movements very elegant).
The first prize for clumsiness has to go to the head of the German consular department, though, for he was the only one who managed to drop a plate. He's a very cute guy (married of course, with 3 young children), and got even cuter when he blushed furiously after the incident. And he giggled.
So all in all, today seems to be a very good day. Ambassador away on some obscure business trip, first secretary in a surprisingly mellow mood (usually he freaks out when he's chargé d'affaires even for a single day), not many visa applicants - and the weekend is already very close.
