And because today is a Turkish holiday...
May. 19th, 2008 09:53 am...things on our side of the embassy are nice and calm, whereas on the other side the air is so thick with stress that you can cut it.
So I thought, why not do another post - one never knows when the next occasion will present itself.
My toenails remain woefully unpainted, because instead of personal beautification, I felt inclined to cook yesterday. So I baked bread (brown bread! With a ready-made mix I'd ordered from Austria. You just have to add water and knead and let rest and bake), I made an excellent veggie spaghetti sugo and peperonata. My fridge was crammed with vegetables, and since this week might be rather busy, I thought I'd stock up on things that are quick and easy to heat. Because I don't really feel like cooking when I come home at 7 p.m. after a whole day of staring at visa applications.
Since an Ambassador-less entry wouldn't be a proper entry, here's another, Ambassador-related bit:
The Federal President will be accompanied, among others, by a delegation of scientist and university representatives. So I've been given the task of accompanying a university rector to his meeting tomorrow afternoon with his Turkish counterpart.
So far, so good.
But: There's a reception scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow at the residence, which will be attended by roughly 200 people. Needless to say that lowly Embassy staff is not invited. OK with me.
But today I received a message from the ambassador, telling me that I have to contact my rector 5 minutes before our departure (3 p.m.) at the latest. So I was foolhardy enough to ask how exactly I was meant to "contact" the man, since I don't have his phone number, and it will be a bit difficult to locate him among 200+ people.
She responded that she didn't have his phone no. either.
So I asked how I ought to contact him.
What was the answer I got?
"If this is a task too difficult for you, please let me know so that we can choose somebody else to accompany the rector"
I wrote back that I didn't find it too difficult, but that, due to total lack of information, there might be a meeting point or something similar I simply didnt know about, but that I am, however, sufficiently creative to find the man, even without any constructive thoughts/hints by the Ambassador.
Did she really think I was going to say meekly, "Yes, big boss, you guessed it right, I'm way too stupid to fulfill this task, please let somebody else do it?" I might not be the Slytherinest of Slytherins, but I certainly won't serve the enemy their trump cards on a silver plate.
Doris just deposited 5 stacks of visa applications on my desk. I think it might be time to get working.
