The embassy is situated between a 25-storey bank building on one side and an abandoned garden/orchard with a decrepit building belonging to the Russian Embassy on the other. There's quite a lot of cats in the Russian garden, which is rather large and overgrown. A few months ago we spotted a Van cat (usually white or white with coloured tail and ears, semi-long fur and, characteristically, differently coloured eyes). She must've been somebody's pet, because those cats are rare and expensive, so either she was abandoned or ran away. Anyway, we've started feeding her, and of course took pictures. Aren't those eyes startling?

And then, 3 days ago, we discovered a kitten, about 8 weeks old and abandoned by her (we think, might also be his) mum. She's been adopted to become the official embassy cat - all the others are way too shy and wild - and baptized Maggie in honour of our president's wife. In caswe she turns out to be a boy, he'll be called Heinz-Erwin, which is an exceedingly unsuitable name for a small kitten but might be grown into. This is Maggie:

Gabriele and I are going to take her to the vet today, just to have her looked at and de-wormed. Vaccination will come later, and then she'll have to be sterilized too, because I think that's the best you can do with half-wild cats. Prevent them from having lots of kittens, and see that they stay as healthy as possible.
Kenan, our new janitor, has already been instructed to keep an eye on her. This morning he brought us a makeshift kitten shelter made from a large cardboard box, which she seems to like.
It's a pity neither of us can take her, but as far as I'm concerned, 2 cats are just the right number. 3 would be too much for many reasons, one of them transportation, since you're not allowed more than one cat carrier on the airplane, and 3 in a carrier would be a bit of a squeeze.

Heres another piccie of Maggie, looking slightly bridal:
