To Lithuania, maybe
Jun. 6th, 2008 02:48 pmOr maybe not, if they can't find anybody stupid enough to go to Ankara. Anyway, I applied for 1st Secretary/Consul at the Austrian Embassy in Vilnius. Salary-wise it's more or less like here, there isn't much work, and the Ambassador is a silly cow, but more silly than evil, so that's probably better than here (not that it could get much worse).
Considering that the Ambassador (the one here) would be willing to carry me all the way to Lithuania, provided she never has to lay eyes on me again, the transfer seems very likely. There is the problem of finding a replacement though, and that might throw a spanner in the works.
I'm not overly keen on leaving, so I'll just sit back and watch. If I get the job, I'd have to move in September.
Speaking of Ambassadors, I really, really need to relate the latest episode of this increasingly insane soap opera: I think it has become clear from my entries of the last 6 or so months that we really had a lot to do here. State visits, inspections, the EURO - it hasn't been a piece of cake. Most of us couldn't even stay home on public holidays. Imagine therefore our complete bewilderment, when we received a message yesterday morning from the beloved Ambassador, which read, "Esteemed staff, there will be a garden party on 28 June to celebrate the EURO 2008 with a buffet and live music. Embassy staff pays only half price, i.e. € 20 for their tickets."
Is that abysmally tactless and pusillanimous and disgusting or what? We work off our arses, and then we have to PAY???
I couldn't help writing back "Dear Ambassador, thank you for the invitation - I'm sure that there aren't many Ambassadors who would express their esteem of their staff's work in such a way."
Ambiguous enough, although I doubt that she'll get the sarcasm.
I'm feeling a bit weird now, to tell the truth. By applying for Vilnius, I kind of detached myself from Ankara. Just a littel bit, but Ankara is still home, and so it feels, well weird. Not in a bad way, though.
