A series of pleasant but uneventful days
Jan. 26th, 2011 08:16 amWell, Monday wasn't too pleasant, to say the truth. I have no idea how I managed to survive that day, although it got slightly better once I lay down on the couch at Lola's/Alexandra's place. Since the ambassador had to attend an event at 11 a.m., which took place quite close to where the Black Beast dwells, I went with him in the Embassy car, and Blerim the driver then dropped me off. Not vomiting on the way required a lot of discipline, though.
Given that I was feeling like a total wreck, I decided to cancel tennis and go straight home after work.
Then Alexandra sent me a text message -- no flights available on Monday, so she'd have to return on Tuesday i.e. yesterday. Bummer, because I had to go and see Lola again in the evening. So I thought, oh what the hell, and un-cancelled tennis. Unsurprisingly I felt much better after playing for an hour, then paid Lola a not-too-long visit, went home, had an enormous bowl of broth with mushrooms and small pasta, accompanied by a glass of red wine, and fell asleep shortly after 8 p.m. Slept nine hours and woke up yesterday at 5 fresh as a daisy.
Yesterday was indeed pleasant and uneventful -- boss not in a very good mood in the morning, and he wanted me to write a report on the possible consequences/spreading of the riots in Albania. So I wrote the report, and when he returned to the embassy around noon, the mood was improving. He was happy with the report, too, and the two meeetings we had in the afternoon (people who came to see him, and he wanted me to be present) went accordingly well.
Yesterday was also a no-sports day, because I had to do some grocery shopping after work, and go to the pharmacy, and later in the evening I went to see Alexandra and Lola. Stefanie came, too, and we had a very nice girls' night.
And now, some random observations:
1) Boss eulogy: I was of course looking like death warmed over on Monday, and of course he asked me whether I was sick. Since I don't see any reason to be ashamed of the occasional hangover, I told him that that was what was wrong.
Now, you have to know that the German expression for hangover is "Kater", i.e. tomcat (don't ask me why).
So, while we were in the car together, and I was bravely fighting the nausea, he merely said mildly, "It's a good thing Lola has been castrated, so at least your 'Kater' can't get her pregnant."
Love him.
2) Speaking of vomiting -- yes, I know, not a subject for polite conversation. There's nothing more nausea-inducing, as far as I'm concerned, than getting into a taxi and realizing that the driver has a severe case of halitosis. Especially in the early morning when I'm going to work. Today it was so bad (although the driver really was a nice guy) that I had to stuff two extra-strength chewing gums into my mouth and pretend to be yawning all the time, so I could inhale my own, mint-scented breath. When I wasn't pretending to yawn, I inhaled the perfume I'd put on my wrists. But, major YUCK!
3) Today I'm going to use my lunch break to buy presents, Christmas for Janine and birthday for my brother's partner. Both are going to get Ohrid pearls.
4) I caved in and have decided to go to the Viennese Ball. It will take place on 19 March, and now I really have to get on with planning a dress. And invite the people I want to have at my table very soon. Maybe my brother will be able to come this year, but I'm going to find out when I see him this weekend.
