Deep thoughts on ASOIAF
Dec. 27th, 2011 10:48 amChristmas weekend was wonderful, and just as I'd hoped it would be. Tennis, critters, moderate amounts of not overly healthy food, lots of sleep, and dvds.
I finished watching season 2 of "In Treatment" -- much too short, really. Which doesn't mean they didn't do an excellent job with very credible, plausible endings to each patient's story, but since I love the show so much, each season could go on and on forever, and I'd never get tired of it. Apart from the fact that, at age 61, Gabriel Byrne is still sex onna stick, he's also one of the best actors I know, and in these almost theatrical, intimate pieces he just shines. Plus, the script writers are geniuses, and the other actors are also wonderful. Fortunately there is a third season, but it'll be a long time until it comes out. *sighs*
Then I watched season 6 of "How I Met Your Mother" for a bit of light entertainment: it's still very good, even though the concept is clearly wearing a bit thin. Anyway, there were some truly amusing episodes, especially the one involving yet another Robin Sparkles dvd Barney managed to unearth.
And then, as the crowning glory, I got started on "Game of Thrones".
Not sure who said this -- I think it was
shiv5468-- that it's basically a soap with knights and dragons (well, dragons' eggs for the time being). If you only watch the tv adaptation, that's pretty much true I guess. Somehow they didn't quite succeed in translating the books' main theme into the tv series. IMO the main theme is "What does power, the gaining, loss and wielding thereof, do to people?", and Martin does a pretty good job of showing the subtle differences, also because different people are put in almost identical situations; for example, being Hand of the King -- you see a bit of what John Arryn did, and then Ned Stark and then Tyrion. And so on and so forth, but I think that it's not really visible in the tv adaptation, so that it does, indeed, turn into a well-made soap with lots of top totty. Slashy top totty, at that, which is never hinted at in the books, so I don't quite understand why Loras Tyrell has to first shave Renly's chest and then give him a blow job, considering that book!Renly is definitely straight.
Plus, I don't understand why Ned Stark couldn't lie on his sickbed without a shirt, but that's of course a strictly subjective, pervy observation ;-)
I'll be going on another three-hour lunch break today. One of the perks of being a worm. Then back to the Embassy, change for tennis, so I can work off the lunch. All things considered that's not too bad.
ETA: And once again Fate forces me to stay on the path of virtue... Gerald, who thought he'd be able to work today, had to return home due to excruciating back pain, so I have to print visas. Extended lunch break will have to be postponed to tomorrow. Damn it.
