I really didn't do a lot this weekend. Bit of writing, bit of reading. Did I mention that I went to see 'Veronica Guerin' on Saturday (with mother)? What a strangely unsatisfying film. And I still haven't worked out exactly why it left me with that feeling. Too Hollywood-sy for a documentary, too dry to be much of a movie. I mean, the story in itself is moving, yes, but it is told in a way that doesn't allow the spectator to get into the characters. For the whole duration of the film, I was constantly conscious of it being just that: a film. The distance remained. Is it the fault of the camera? The actors? The script? Or is it just that the personal history of one person, tragic as it may be, doesn't really get to me unless it's linked to much greater, much more tragic events? (Like e.g. The Pianist)

So today I'm going to acquire some Excel skills. Don't know when I'm ever going to need them, but at least I'll do something useful at the office, just this once (useful only for myself, but that's quite OK)

Orpheus has now 5 1/2 chapters. [livejournal.com profile] ozratbag2's very insightful comment on ch.2 made me think about the way I'm handling the subplot. Originally, I intended to introduce it a bit later. Maybe I should have stuck with that idea. Then again, I had a very good reason for introducing it at this point. A subplot is such a wonderful means of quickening the main plot's pace without resorting to phrases like "The days and weeks passed quickly, and one day Hermione noticed with surprise that it was almost Christmas." Many authors do that, and I can't say I'm a big fan of this technique. Because it gives the reader the impression that the characters perceive time, i.e. also their lives, that way, that for them everything passes in a blur. Which certainly isn't the case, and so I thought it preferable to simply interrupt a rather slow-developing plot at some point, when it had been sufficiently established how the relationship progresses etc., introduce the subplot and thus jump a few weeks. Hm. I'll have to go over it again, just to make sure it really works.

And now a bit of cleaning (all for ze boyz, of course), shower and work.

I did a bit of light (i.e. fanfic) reading during the lunch break, which is now nearing its end, and made the following astounding discovery: a certain person, let us name her B., is often mentioned in A/Ns, with many thanks for having betaed the story. Most of those stories are of a quality that makes me think 'What the hell did that B. persondo?'
So I searched for B.'s name, and it turned out that she's quite a prolific author. The quality of her stories sort of answers my previous question.
But I'm asking myself whether fanfic authors ever have a look at the stories of people who offer their services as betas. And if they do, don't they see that people like B. won't be of any help? Or are they just afraid of saying, 'No thanks a lot for the offer, but I'd rather search for somebody else'?
Totally pointless question, I know. But I couldn't help wondering.

Boots!

On my way to the cinema on Saturday, I saw those yummy lace-up ankle boots and vowed to buy them today. So I bought them today. The cut is rather elegant, but the colour (black-brown melee) and the grommets remind a bit of the boots pilots used to wear in the 20s and 30s (Monty Python's Biggles comes to mind). So they'll go equally well with long skirts and trousers. Yayyyy! If I manage to squeeze Cornelius into one of them and keep him in there long enough, I'll make a Puss-in-Boots icon.

Gacked this shamelessly from [livejournal.com profile] 00smut and cheated even more shamelessly.
