Maybe the flist can help me answer that question.
These are the facts: I ordered and got an iPod (shiny! toy love!) and a compact stereo, the product description of which said that 1) it's equipped with an iPod flip dock and 2) it's got a CD-ripping function. So I thought the two would combine, i.e. that the dratted thing was able to transfer music from CD to iPod. It doesn't. It transfers Music to an mp3-player, and I wasn't even able to ascertain that it does, because something is wrong with the satanic device. It's one of those sleek thingies with next to no buttons, so you have to do almost everything by remote. Strangely enough, it responds to the remote, but only for switching the power on and off and operating the CD tray. Since it's impossible to check manually whether other functions work or not, it is also impossible to determine whether it's the stereo or the remote that doesn't work. So I'll have to write a complaint. I hate writing complaints, but it'll have to be done.
Concerning the question about my idiocy and the extent thereof: supposing the stereo decides to work one of these days, is it possible to convert music into mp3 files, put those on my notebook and from there on the iPod? I'd really be grateful for advice. If it doesn't work that way, I won't bother buying the mp3 player.
Note to self: If you, dear PW37, weren't such an idiot, you'd just have taken your notebook to the repair shop and have the CD drive changed. Stoopid, really. But with the HGLM challenge looming, I'm not going to separate myself from my notebook, especially since I can't buy another one here because of the Turkish keyboard.
The somewhat unsatisfactory result of the whole transaction is:
1) Spent more than € 100 on compact stereo which doesn't work
2) Was so angry that I briefly entertained thoughts of flinging the blasted thing out the window
3) Will have to start (at least equally) annoying exchange of emails with producer of said &§%$"($&§$%! device
4) Spent € 70 for downloading music via iTunes
On the plus side:
1) new iPod is lovely, shiny gadget
2) iTunes downloads are relatively cheap
3) I only downloaded things I either didn't have, or of which I didn't have that particular recording (like e.g. Goldberg Variations played by Glenn Gould - his humming is very, very annoying btw)
Other things accomplished this weekend:
1) baked bread
2) watched almost all of Jeeves&Wooster (Fry and Laurie)
3) read Thank You, Jeeves and The Wooster Code
4) am now prey to mild Jeeves-obsession
5) (not exactly an accomplishment, but then neither is 4) Desperately want to write HP-Wodehouse crossover featuring Lucius Malfoy and Jeeves
