Good things
Apr. 13th, 2010 06:40 amI completely forgot to mention that the secretary of state had to postpone his visit. Apparently our minister of finance tore his achilles tendon, and so can't go to Madrid (I think), and Lopatka has to go instead of him. It's a blessing, really, because boss is away for a seminar and would've had to come back tonight with the late flight, and we know how that turned out last week. Visit will probably take place on 24/25 June.
On Sunday I was invited to lunch at my landlord's place. Not only was the food gorgeous -- Macedonian starters, whole lamb made in the oven -- but the company was great. Thanks to the Macedonian tradition of having rakia with your starters, everybody was slightly drunk when the main course arrived. They'd also invited Goran's oldest friend and his wife, and the conversation was great. Mostly English, but I managed to show off a bit of my Macedonian. Heh. Discussion with Goran's friend was quite interesting, mostly political, and I got to see what diplomats rarely see, i.e. how fed up people here are with hearing everybody tell them how exactly they ought to run their country, lives etc. They're aware that most of what their politicians are doing is shit, but at least it's their own shit. An understandable reaction, although of course the wrong people will be benefiting from it. Still, it was great to get an un-embellished view of things -- ministers etc. certainly aren't going to tell you to mind your own business.
Goran, my landlord, and Snezana, his wife, have two children, boy and girl. She's 16, and I think I've never seen such a beautiful girl. Like a pre-Raffaelite painting. Her brother is Goran's spitting image, i.e. will be absolutely gorgeous in a few years (he's 14 now). They're bright, and well-behaved, and doing well at school, but not trained monkeys. Ana speaks excellent English and is also learning German at school. She even said a few sentences, blushing but brave, and I complemented her on her accent. Petar, the brother, was too shy even to speak much English. But it was a rather mischievous shyness, with his father's lopsided grin.
The whole orgy finished at 9.30 (we'd started at 2 p.m.) with an hour or so of improvised disco in the living room. It helped us sober up. *sigh* What a lovely, lovely day.
Yesterday ze boyz go their deputy mother goddess Slavica back and seemed very happy about it. So was I -- coming back to a clean place is just wonderful.
Slavica's son is a professional football player, and for the next few months he'll be living in Sweden. So I talked to Vesna yesterday, because I'm planning to give Slavica a week off in May and pay her a ticket to Sweden so she can see how her son lives. Vesna will talk to him and ask whether it's convenient for him, and then I'll prepare the surprise. Vesna actually started to cry and said I was too good to live on this earth. I told her that for me it was just a bit of money, and if I could do something to make Slavica happy, I certainly would. So let's see whether that works out. If a visit isn't a good idea, I'll just give her the week off and maybe a voucher for a day at the beauty spa.
Tailor tomorrow. I've got loads of piccies of things for him to copy. Finally I'll have trousers! Right now I only have skirts or jeans, because I just couldn't find anything I liked. And I prefer trousers when it's hot. There will be dresses, too, though, and skirts and... Yayy!
