Not quite a success
Jun. 3rd, 2010 07:11 amWhat's the matter with Ikea? I remembered their tablewear department to have a much wider and much nicer choice of products. And no, pea-green, charcoal-grey or excrement-brown plates of not very high quality are certainly not what I could possibly buy for the residence. I got most of the rest and told boss I was sorry, but he and spouse would have to buy their tableware in Austria -- they'll be going there by car in summer, so that shouldn't be a big problem. Will make one more attempt next week at Merkur here in Skopje, but unless they have something good, I'll give up officially.
I was being reasonably good and only got a mirror (high and not too wide, for entrance), 2 sets of bed sheets (pretty!), 2 cutting boards (big ones, because cutting parsley on a small board is hell) and 2 small baskets for the kitchen cupboard, so the spices are now in some semblance of order. And the lamp Irene wanted.
Trip was ok. Blerim, whose praises I've often sung, is a wonderful, calm driver and a nice guy, so we had a good time chatting. Small hitch: given the long-standing issues between Greece and Macedonia, the Greeks go as far in their pettiness as not to put "Skopje" on their signposts. Or rather, they do, but only on the small one you only see when you've already gone past the exit. Stupid! That only leads to lots of angry, disoriented Macedonians making illegal u-turns on the ring road. In the end we found our road, and we hadn't lost more than maybe 15 minutes.
OK, must get going now, because I'm playing tennis at 9. Not on the clay court I suppose. Grrrr.
