It's hot. It's bloody awfully, brain-meltingly, horrifyingly hot. Almost 40° every day. Almost no wind during the night. The electricity bill for July is probably going to make me faint, but now I've found the perfect solution for both Slavica and the critters (me, too, but I'm usually not at home during the day): during the night, all possible windows and balcony doors open. Before I leave for work, I close everything except for the balcony door in the living room and the window in Lola's room, and switch on the a/c in my bedroom and the guest room. This means that there are two cool rooms and two warm ones, i.e. the critters can choose, and Slavica doesn't have to suffer while ironing. And since the open balcony door and window are on the same side of the flat, there's no draft, i.e. only a minimum of hot air coming in.

In other news, boss has left for the first part of his holiday -- till 26 July probably -- and things are starting to get markedly quieter round here. We've also finally received the information about boss staying till 11 November and new ambassador arriving on the 14th. 4 more months then, and after that we'll see.

Lola's erstwhile owner slave Alexandra continues to amaze me with her mix of irresponsibility and definitely distorted perception of reality.
You'll maybe remember that she took in this stray at the beginning of May, i.e. the female cat who'd been pregnant and saved almost at death's door, because she was carrying for dead unborn kittens. Alexandra named her Skopje (in a fit of wild originality I'm tempted to say), and Skopje isn't the most approachable of cats. Not aggressive, but I'd say a bit antisocial.
You may also remember that the ultimate reason for confiscating Lola was Alexandra's crazy idea of taking her back and introducing her to Skopje.
Now I'm fully in favour of Alexandra getting a companion for Skopje, but being Alexandra, this is what she did: she spotted an apparently motherless, 8-weeks-old kitten in the vicinity of her office, decided that it was going to be Skopje's companion and took it to the vet for examination and vaccination. This happened on Monday, and on Tuesday she took the kitten, whom in yet another fit of wild originality she calls Vodno, back home.
So far, so good.
You're waiting for the punch line, aren't you?
So, for your enjoyment, here's punch line #1: This afternoon she leaves for a seminar in Pristina and will be back on Saturday afternoon.
#2: Skopje is soooo sweeet but a bit jealous, and Vodno is sooo sweeeeet but a bit intimidated, and Skopje keeps hissing at Vodno, and isn't that sweeeeeet? So I tell her to let them establish their positions and borders in peace, but always to be there while they're together, keeping an eye on them, and to have a towel ready in case she has to intervene and pick one of the cats up. When I went next door for a quick drink last night, what did I see? The stupid bint was sitting out on the balcony with a friend, cats unsupervised and on their own.
#3: Vodno is so sweeeeet, and he keeps eating Skopje's food, isn't that sweeeet?

There's more, but I'm not going to deign to even write it down.
It's a good thing the friend was there last night, because otherwise I might have exploded.

I'm neither going to tell her nor to offer, but of course I'll be having a look at the cats while she's gone. Because either was she stupid enough not to separate them, or she did separate them, which means that Vodno the kitten will be on his own, alone in her bedroom. It'd be ok for a few hours, but not for 48.
If I could, I'd lock her into a room for at least four weeks, and somebody 20 times her size would spend an hour every day with her, giving her food and talking to her. I wonder whether she'd see reason.
Not to mention that the a/c unit is in her living room, which is where Skopje dwells when the cats are being separated, and which also means that the kitten must stay in the hot, stuffy bedroom.
On second thought, I think I'd rather give her a really, really thorough beating if I could, and then I'd warn her that, if nothing changes, she'll get another one and another one, until she has learned to take proper care of her cats.

OK, feeling definitely better now.
/end of rant

I'm coping rather well with tennis withdrawal (Elena will be gone till the 20th), but played an hour yesterday with Pinar. 7-8 p.m., and it was still over 30°. But we were having fun. Running is impossible -- or rather, possible only before 7 a.m. or after 10 pm., both of which aren't feasible -- so I've gone back to the gym. Funny how stuffy and restrictive running on the treadmill feels, if one is used to running outdoors. But it's going to be for two months at the most, so I guess I shall cope.

Not in a very social mood these days, so I haven't been following the f-list very closely, for which many apologies.
Keeping fingers crossed for [livejournal.com profile] dickgloucester 's journey home, though. *waves*

There's fuck-all to do right now, so I'm going to play a few rounds of Mahjong, to improve my skills.
