The quarterly report is finished and ready to be sent off after boss signs it.
Unless anything horrible comes up, I'm leaving behind a tidy (electronic) desk and may start my 5-day holiday with a clear conscience.

I've decided not to participate in this year's tennis tournament. Because, you know, even if that makes me an overambitious bitch, I play to win. Not when I'm just playing with Elena or a friend. But a tournament *is* something where there's a winner, and even though I'm not nearly conceited enough to think I might come first, I don't want to come last merely because my serves are being wonky right now. So I guess I'll be going running on Saturday morning -- with the weather being as it is, that's just perfect.
Speaking of the weather: Janine seems to have lost her amazing rain-generating superpowers. The forecast keeps announcing a succession of the same splendid, sunny early-autumn weather we're having now.

Some of you f-listers may have cottoned on to the fact that I'm a planner at heart ;-) That is, I don't mind changing plans, but there has to be a plan in the first place.
So right now I'm thinking about my future, and for now the plan is this: come 2012 and the list of postings available in 2013, this is what I'm going to do: apply for Vilnius -- reasonable possibility of getting it, apply for Consul General in Istanbul -- virtually no possibility of getting it. If I get Vilnius, I'll have to think about cat transportation, which is a bit of a bummer. I mean, Skopje-Vienna isn't a problem because it can be done by car. So can Vienna-Vilnius, but I certainly won't be able to afford a driver. Not willing, rather, but let's just see how much it costs. Going by train would be a possibility... Or just not applying for Vilnius. Aaaargh. Tough choices.

And, speaking of being a planner, I'm reminded of a distinction boss made a few days ago, re. humankind being divided into travellers and dwellers -- the two of us being prime examples of those categories.
It's not such a bad working hypothesis, I think. And yesterday, while cleaning the cat toilets, I developed it further -- I think that most dwellers are readers whereas the travellers, while they may occasionally read, aren't such avid devourers of anything printed. At least most of the people I know, and most of them being dwellers like me, are also fervent readers.

And, speaking of the boss, sometimes he makes the most remarkable statements.
In my office, shortly before 4 p.m., me already in tennis attire.
Boss, walks in, looks round. "It's dark in here!"
Me, "Yes, because I had to close the blinds while I was changing into my tennis clothes and didn't want to do so under the eyes of the passsers-by."
Boss, "So will you be participating in the tournament?"
Me, "Not sure yet, it all depends on how my right arm is behaving."
Boss, "Well, if you can't undress under the eyes of passers-by, I guess you can't play while people are watching, either."
Me: o_O
Boss, "I meant, erm..."
Me, "Are you saying that you've got to be a professional stripper in order to be a tennis player?"
Boss, "Well, if you put it like that... probably no."

/end of broadcast
