I was so sure on Thursday -- which I'd spent at home, with tea and Critters -- that I was going to be fine on Friday. The Snot Demon had other ideas, though, and yesterday was completely horrible.
So I did what experience has taught me is the best treatment for this kind of affliction, i.e. sinuses congested, nose constantly dripping, no sense of taste and smell: I put an ice pack on my face once I got home, and Vick Vapo Rub up my nose. Worked like a charm, and today I'm almost 100% fine and didn't have to cancel the tennis lesson.
I wonder why/whether nobody else has discovered the ice treatment as of yet - stands to reason, doesn't it, to put ice on something that is inflamed. Nobody would put a hot water bottle on an inflamed body part, so why should the sinuses be an exception?
Anyway, it's ok now.
Plus, I've accomplished something very useful: the way I was looking and sounding yesterday, the ambassador (who fortunately made one of his rare appearances at my office) is now convinced that I stay home sick only if I'm really sick, since yesterday's awfulness didn't seem to warrant an extended sick leave. This means, though, that the odd day off won't be suspicious in the least, unless I overdo it, which I won't.
Heh.

Since I didn't have a fever I was able to read most of Thursday. I finished A Dance with Dragons -- my opinion of GRRM hasn't improved. Rather the contrary, really. OK, the guy has imagination, and the characters are interesting, but even though ASOIAF is supposed to be an epic, the story developing into something like the Nile Delta isn't the hallmark of an author who knows his craft. In the first and second books, every chapter being told from the perspective of a different character was an excellent narrative device, but by now there are so many different characters/perspectives -- it's getting a bit lame, and I'm getting this feeling of an increasingly flailing author who *needs* to show the reader what's happening, but the main character is gone from that particular place, and therefore some secondary character has to take over, and the whole thing becomes less and less organic.

I also read Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, which was cute.

Right now I'm listening to the rain-- the weather is utterly disgusting. On Thursday and yesterday we got about 50cm of snow, and today the temperature is above zero, and it's raining heavily. Yuck. At home is the best place to be. Ze boyz are snoozing on  my bed, yin-yang style, Lola is snoozing next to me on the couch, and between four and five the nice strong lads are going to deliver my groceries. Even though I'm very much an outdoors person, today I definitely prefer the comfort of indoors.
