Snow!

Tons of it. Wow. It snowed all day yesterday, then stopped during the night, and started again today around 6 a.m. The temperature is well below zero, so it's wonderfully light, non-sticky snow. But it was snowing so heavily this morning, combined with a strong wind, that Blerim the driver had to come and get Irene and me with the Embassy car, and *he* barely made it up the hill. The problem is that the City of Skopje has eight snow ploughs. Yes, eight. And of course they first have to clean all the main streets and motorways, so they'll probably make it to my neck of the woods when the snow's already gone. (Which is probably what they're counting on)

Elena and I intrepidly played tennis yesterday, but had to break it off after 1h 40min -- the heating was, as always, completely shitty, but when it's -7° outside, shitty doesn't mean five but zero degrees inside. I was wearing four layers -- sleeeveless t-shirt, long-sleeved t-shirt, long-sleeved sweatshirt and sleeveless padded jacket -- and in spite of running all the time I just couldn't get warm. So I entrusted my sports bag and racquets to Elena, changed into a dry jumper, shouldered my backpack and went home on foot.
It was absolutely marvellous. Almost no cars out and about, the air very cold and dry, the snow crunchy. I arrived home after a 55-minutes walk, thoroughly warmed-up and happy. Prepared some barley-and-mushroom soup with lots of cayenne pepper and snuggled up on the couch with the critters.

Today after work there'll be gym, and after that another walk home. It's a great workout (more so as even sturdy boots with a deep profile have very little traction walking uphill in the snow), and one of the few things I truly enjoy about winter: being all bundled up and warm, out in the cold air. Every time I put on my trusted army boots I mentally pat my own shoulder for having had the foresight to buy them. More or less indestructible provided you clean and waterproof them regularly, and perfect for walking on snow.

It's hard to believe that in six months, the temperature will be reaching 42° and everybody will be complaining about the heat...
