And it was only partially my fault.
I had to cancel today's cardiologist appointment, because the visit at the lab fell through, and the doctor needs the blood test results in order to have the complete picture. Fall through it did because I woke up at 4 a.m. yesterday and was unfortunately unable to get to 8 a.m. on weak tea and water only, without fainting that is. Totally impossible.
I might have fared better today, since I woke at 4.30, which makes it slightly more manageable, but had of course not had the presence of mind not to gulp down large amounts of cold juice-and-water when I woke up during the night. Twice, and the second time was around 3 a.m.
I wrote the doctor a mail already yesterday morning, apologizing and proposing that we make an appointment once I have the test results. I'm not sleeping badly, but I frequently fall asleep quite early and consequently wake up at stupid o'clock, which isn't a problem per se but makes the staying-without-anything pretty much impossible.
Still, I'll start playing tennis again on Sunday -- with Elena, YAYYYYY!!!! -- but since we're starting with only one hour, and it will be mostly technical, I'm not overly worried about possible negative effects. We'll have to stick to one hour twice a week for the nex month or six weeks anyway, because Elena is still slightly out of shape, and I have to be careful not to overstrain the muscles on my right forearm. So all should be well.

My mother left the hospital yesterday; they managed to get her back into shape quite nicely. So now it all hangs on the changes in the domestic situation, which hopefully will occur, and if they do she ought to be more or less fine.
It was nice, being able to talk to her every day on the phone. Now that she's back home, I suppose our phone conversations will become more infrequent, because my father is a complete arsehole and gets jealous and irritable whenever he hears her talking to me. That man really ought to have had the decency to die a year ago, when he was so poorly. Given that he has the constitution of a cockroach, however, he did of course surprise everybody by giving death the finger. Oh, well.

The vet dropped by at the Embassy yesterday -- I'd been pestering him for weeks, because I still owed him the money for the infertility shots he'd given the neighbour's cats -- and gave me the good news that there is now an EU-certified and recognized vet lab in Skopje. This means that Lola's blood test for rabies antibodies will take a lot less time; before, the vets always had to take the blood samples to the only certified lab in Nis/ Serbia, which was a) costly and b) a pain in the neck.
So the plan is that we'll be taking the blood sample some time around the middle of February, and once I have the results (which will doubtlessly be negative, i.e. positive), I can arrange my next trip to Vienna, during which I intend to visit my vet and ask him to issue an EU pet passport for the Black Menace. It's not strictly according to the rules, but I have no worries about him doing it, because the Beast is regularly vaccined and healthy. That way, I won't have to deal with possible (although rather improbable) problems at the border; having three cats with EU passports is certainly better than two with EU and one with a Macedonian passport. Better safe than sorry, especially where the Critters are concerned.

Speaking of which, here's Lola, conscientiously guarding my army boots. (Maybe she has a thing for uniforms, just like the Mother Goddess...)
