And now it's winter
Dec. 22nd, 2009 09:45 amIt all started on Saturday. First I went to have my hair done, and then to the gym, and afterwards Irene and I met up at the shopping centre for a pizza and a bit of shopping. When we met, shortly after 1 p.m., a few snow flakes were coming down, but really only a few. Two hours later, the city was gridlocked. We managed to get a taxi, but it turned out that the street leading up to our lofty neighbourhood was as slippery as a ton of eels, and so the taxi driver refused to go any further. (Also because he didn't have winter tyres, the bastard). So we were standing there, at the bottom of the hill, me with 5 shopping bags and a bag of cat litter, Irene with just one shopping bag. Although not usually prone to randomly throwing away things I don't need, I decided to leave the cat litter right there -- 5 kg less to carry -- thanked Irene profusely for taking over one of my bags, and up we went.
After I'd got over my anger at being dumped, it was actually quite nice -- dense, dense snow, and lots of interesting scenes to look at, like the SUV with all its wheels blocked, sliding peacefully down the road and into the next car. And oh, was I grateful for weighing 20 kg less and being in acceptable shape, otherwise the treck upwards would've been much, much worse. But we made it, and then there was changing into dry clothes, preparing spiced tea laced with whisky, and enjoying the view.
It was a good thing that I didn't have any plans for Sunday, because going out would've been as difficult as it would have been unpleasant. So I had a lazy, cosy day at home with lots of boyz-cuddling, reading and watching TV.
Yesterday was the picture-perfect winter day: cloudless, extremely cold and dry. Getting a taxi in the morning was a bit iffy, but there was no way I'd have walked to work -- the main streets were snow-free, but it was bloody icy, and I don't walk down steep, icy roads, thank you very much. Still, Irene and I managed to get to the Embassy almost in time.
Right now, there's nothing much to do at work. Strange feeling, because our Foreign Minister will be coming to Skopje on 22 January, and I have this feeling I ought to be doing *something*, only we don't have enough information yet, so there's nothing I can do. It'll only be a one-day working visit, so we'll probably manage quite well. (But I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the visit to be cancelled, to tell the truth...)
Nephew Daniel arrives tomorrow, for a very non-christmas-y 5-day holiday. Irene goes to Austria tomorrow, to return on 2 January, together with Janine. And New Year's Eve looks to be nice as well, since I've been invited to a party at my Swedish colleague's place.
Since I might not be online very often during the next days, I'd like to wish you all wonderful holidays, whichever way you choose to spend or celebrate them!
