It's still hot (around 33°), but dry, and the nights are blessedly cool.
On Saturday I went to play tennis at 9 and had intended to go for a run afterwards. My knees were feeling a bit shaky, though (1st day of period, never a good day), and so I decided just to stay there at the café, have a coffee, read a bit and go grocery shopping afterwards. Since I was feeling lots better in the afternoon, I accompanied Irene to the gym, and in the evening we went out to have dinner at the Spanish place, where they make an excellent paella, which was preceded by equally excellent Spanish ham, sausages, cheese and a deliciously garlic-y tomato salad.

Discovery of Paradise took place yesterday. I'd reckoned that, if we went to the pool right when it opened, i.e. at 10 a.m., most of the Neandertals might still be sleeping. When we arrived there shortly after 10, there were maybe five people at the pool, the water was calm, cool and clean, and the music, although already playing, hadn't yet been cranked up to deafening volume. And it stayed that way till 12.30!!! I swam 3,5 km (70 lengths, first 40 and then blocks of 10), and it was totally, utterly fantastic. We left a little after 3 p.m. when music and Neandertals were becoming too much. Although a bit tired from swimming and sun, I made vegetarian spaghetti sugo, and we watched Life on Mars. Yes, I've created another addict -- Irene loves it!

So, not an overly productive weekend, but a great one, especially as going to the pool on hot weekends is something like the quintessence of summer for me, and now I can have that, too.
Did I mention that one of my recent orders from amazon contained the first 4 seasons of M.A.S.H.? As is the case with many British and American series, I'd only ever seen it with German dubbing (although that used to be much better back in the days when M.A.S.H. first aired) and always loved it. Turns out that I still love it. The episodes are only 25 min long, which makes for nice in-between watching when I'm cooking or merely feeling like relaxing for half an hour.

Slavica is back with ze boyz and in my flat as of today -- I don't envy her this first day, because, well, I didn't exactly do much around the place. To be very, very honest, I didn't do anything except laundry, dishes and looking after ze boyz.
Next week it'll be Slavica's turn to go on holiday, which means another ungodly week (assuming that cleanliness *is* next to godliness), and after that everyting will be resuming its normal pace. Including work -- I'll have to go through the painful process of laziness withdrawal, more so since the Ambassador won't be here (first there's the annual ambassadors' conference in Vienna, and he's planning another holiday right after that).
Right now however, laziness still reigns, which means going up to th 2nd floor in about an hour to have coffee and a cigarette on the balcony with Vesna -- feels almost like being on holiday.

Oh, and for those who'd just *love* to leave a rude comment: I've scarcely been thinking of Mr H for the whole weekend, and the thought of contacting him didn't even dream of beginning to cross my mind. So there  ;-P   *iz mature*

... but for as long as I'm terminally bored at work, I'll be posting one key phrase each from entries 3, 2 and 1 year ago, from as close a date as possible . Maybe there will even be insightful observations.

(Oh, and look at the cute kittens on the icon -- between the four of them they've surely got a square metre of ears)

Plus, I re-read 'Memory' (Vorkosigan saga) and started re-reading A Civil Campaing (ditto). And played a bit, sweating and swearing because so much of my technique is gone

That was shortly after I'd bought the piano. It's travelled to Skopje with me, but now mainly serves as observation point for Lucius. I'm sure there are worse fates for pianos.

24 August 2008
During my absence the 2009 rota came out, and I'm going to send in my applications tomorrow: Amman, Nikosia, Skopje and Valletta. Besides I'm sure I've recharged the batteries sufficiently to be able to cope much better than I did the last few months.

Ah, the cloud is sprouting a small silver lining. Big misjudgement re. coping better, though. Autumn 2008 was when things started getting *really* bad.

6 August 2009 (the only post I did that month)
This excursion also had another effect: the landscape is so enticing and the country so worth exploring that I decided to get a driving licence. Project will probably start early next year.

Yeah. And pigs fly. Project started about 2 months later, lived no more than a month and seems to have died an ignominious death.

I'll go back to boredom now.
