Because yesterday I prepared my first turkey.
A 7kg-monster, and lo it was tender, juicy and really, really good.
After the morning run I spent the whole day cooking, though. There were mushrooms in cream sauce, stuffing, red cabbage with port and fruit, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce (with candied ginger and pears), a huge salad. And dark and white chocolate mousse for afters, but I'd already made that on Friday.
Based on principle and experience, I never make any dish for the first time for guests, but trying it out just for myself is a bit difficult when it comes to turkeys. So the plunge had to be taken in spite of slight misgivings - I'd promised Janine and therefore couldn't very well duck out of it. It was worth it, though, because I was heaped with compliments by the guests.
The "first time sewing an arse shut" doesn't count as an extra item on the List of Firsts, I guess, but is a sub-category of turkey preparation.
Also, having been friends for almost 30 years makes for strange dialogues:
Me, pottering around in the kitchen.
Janine: You seem a bit forlorn, what are you looking for?
Me: The spaghetti spoon.
Janine: Nah, you always scratch your back with the shoehorn here.
Today I'll be seeing my mother, and friends Lois and Klaus.
Tomorrow I'll have to drop by the ministry :-( , but I'll also meet beloved!boss and have coffee with ex-lover, so on the whole it ought to be a good day as well.
Plus I've been perfectly saintly as far as spending money is concerned. I only bought things I need -- fortunately a pair of black ankle boots was among them.
Off now for morning run.
