It's practically 100% certain now -- although nobody has yet received anything in writing, hence the small caveat -- that Gabriele will be my successor here in Skopje. The one who was in Ankara with me, you know.
This is good news in more than one sense.
I would have had to leave a few articles of furniture behind and/or put them in storage in Austria, and as it turns out, she's more than grateful to 'inherit' most of them.
She'll almost certainly move into my flat, and she'll keep Slavica.
She'll also continue feeding my street cats.
Of course the timing might be a bit dicey -- a few things will have to be done in the flat, and who knows how many days/weeks there will be between my departure and her arrival. We'll have to cross that bridge when we come to it, though. Once we get our official letters we can start plotting.
Goran the Lovely Landlord will be happy to get a new tenant without having to involve and pay a real estate agent. Considering that he'll have another four years of guaranteed rent, he'll be all the more willing to make a few small changes in the kitchen.

On the side of not-so-good, the old proverb "When it rains, it pours", is once more being proven accurate.
Fortunately it's nothing personal.
It's Gerald of course -- SURPRIIIIIISE!
Last night -- Irene had been at my place to watch Big Bang Theory and was just leaving -- Gerald called Irene, ostensibly to ask how she was, but really to find out whether she'd be at work today. Because, as he told her, he needed to go to Austria very urgently, due to a "family emergency".
Exasperation notwithstanding, I do of course understand and support whoever is in such a situation, Gerald being no exception.
I must say, though, that I'm less than convinced of the urgency -- allegedly his grandmother isn't very well and he wants to see her -- because when he called me this morning to ask for authorization of five days off work, he said, "I really have to go. But if it isn't possible, that's OK, too." A rather strange kind of emergency, if you ask me, but if he doesn't want to disclose the true reason, so be it.
Then, this morning he told Irene that he needs cash -- I arrived at work about an hour late, because I had to wait for the vet -- and she (foolishly) said yes. Since cash withdrawal can only be made on the 15th (or the next working day, if the 15th is a non-working day), and the 15th was last Friday, it was of course not possible unless I allowed him to pre-date the receipt. If he had asked me directly, I'd probably have said yes, but going behind my back is something I absolutely can't stand. As he'd already left the Embassy (to top it all off, he'd have sent his wife to get the money), I wrote him a text messsage, saying "I'm sorry, but Irene made a mistake -- cash withdrawal is not possible".
To which he answered "No problem, I'm not here anyway", only to call Irene immediately afterwards, to complain that I'm discriminating against him.
What baffles me is the stupidity of the man -- he knows that Irene and I have been friends for many, many years, so doesn't it occur to him that we might acually *talk*?
God. So stupid, and he probably thinks he's being extra plotty.

There's a lot of really promising-looking prompts over at the SSHG promptfest. I'll choose carefully -- I don't want anything too obviously "me", but OTOH it's pointless to move too far away from what I like to write. It's different if prompts are assigned, but in this case the choice is mine, and so I'll try to find something in between, hoping that I'll manage to get it. Considering that there are 230 prompts for 46 participants (If I'm doing the maths correctly), it shouldn't be too difficult, or so I hope.

Another hour to go, then to the gym and then home -- I hope Lola doesn't bear me a grudge for delivering her to the cruel man who had the audacity to prick her with a needle...
